How I Created My First Digital Product with Canva (My Beginner's Story)

best digital products to sell on canva

A few months ago, I decided to take the first step in my passive income journey by creating my very first digital product: a children’s e-book. As a beginner, I didn’t have any fancy software, but I did have some design skills from making pins for my blog on [Canva]. So, I decided to use Canva for the entire process, from designing the pages to creating the cover.

This post is my real, honest story. I’m not an expert, but I’ve successfully gone through the process of creating and selling a digital product.

I’ll share what I learned from creating my first product, how I use Pinterest to promote it, and also the 6 other popular Canva product ideas I’ve been researching for my next project. This is a look into a real beginner’s experience.

1. My First Product: A Children's E-book

My Personal Experience: My journey started with a simple idea for a children’s e-book. Since I was already comfortable with Canva from designing featured images and Pinterest pins for EarnGears.com, I decided to create the entire book there. The process involved laying out each page, choosing fonts, and creating simple illustrations using Canva’s free elements.

My first digital product, 'Jungle Animals Coloring Book,' was designed entirely on Sanva. Here's a look at the design process.

How I Sell and Promote It: After finishing the design, I listed my e-book on Gumroad, a platform that’s very friendly for new creators.

After completing the design, I listed my e-book on Gumroad, where people can purchase it.

But just listing it wasn’t enough; I had to promote it. For this, I use Pinterest. I create multiple ‘Pins’ on Canva for my e-book and upload them to my Pinterest profile. My plan is that these pins will drive traffic and sales over time. It’s a slow process, but it’s my real-world start in the digital product business.

To promote the product, I design pins like this in Canva and share them on my 'My Little Learners Shop' Pinterest profile.

My Research: 6 More Product Ideas I'm Considering Next

After the experience of creating my e-book, I’ve been researching other digital products that can be made with Canva. Here are 6 ideas that I found to be the most promising for beginners.

2. Social Media Templates

My Research Findings: This is a huge market. Every business needs social media, but most owners don’t have time to design posts every day. I saw that template bundles for Instagram Stories and carousels are incredibly popular. I’ve even seen YouTube case studies where creators share… where a creator shared how they built a full-time income just by selling social media templates. This shows the potential is massive.

3. Digital Workbooks & Educational Planners

My Research Findings: The self-improvement market is evergreen. What I learned is that successful workbooks are interactive. They include checklists, fill-in-the-blank exercises, and reflection questions. It’s not just about providing information; it’s about creating an experience that helps someone achieve a goal, like a “30-Day Self-Care Challenge” workbook.

4. Branding Kits & Media Kits

My Research Findings: This was an interesting discovery. Every new blogger, freelancer, or influencer needs a professional Media Kit to send to brands for sponsorships. These kits often sell for a high price ($50-$150) because they solve a critical business need. It seems like a very profitable niche if you can create a clean, professional design.

5. Resume & Cover Letter Templates

My Research Findings: This is another evergreen market. People are always looking for jobs. What I found is that different industries prefer different styles. For example, a creative professional might want a modern, colorful resume, while someone in finance would prefer a clean, traditional layout. Successful sellers on Etsy often offer a bundle that includes both the resume and a matching cover letter template.

6. Printable Stickers & Digital Planner Accessories

My Research Findings: The digital planning community is very passionate. I learned that people love to customize their digital planners (used on apps like GoodNotes) with digital stickers. These are small products, but successful sellers create large bundles (like a “Seasonal Sticker Pack”) and sell them thousands of times. The work is in the initial creation.

7. Vision Boards & Manifestation Templates

My Research Findings: The wellness and personal development trend is huge. I saw that templates for vision boards, affirmation cards, and gratitude journals are very popular. These products have high emotional value, which means customers are willing to pay a good price for a design that resonates with them.

FAQs

1. How much time did it take you to create your first e-book?

This is a great question. Since it was my first time, the process was a bit slow as I was learning. From the initial idea and designing all the pages to listing it on Gumroad and creating the first promotional pins, I would say it took me around 20-25 hours in total, spread over a few weeks. Now that I understand the process, I’m confident I could create my next product much faster.

You can absolutely start with the free version of Canva. In fact, for my children’s e-book, I made sure to use only free fonts, photos, and elements. This is important because if you use Pro elements in a template, your customer might also need a Pro account to use it. By sticking to free elements, you make your product accessible to everyone. I might upgrade to Canva Pro in the future, but you definitely don’t need it to start.

That was my biggest worry too! My research showed that the key is to niche down. Instead of creating a generic product, it’s better to solve a specific problem for a specific audience. For my first product, I didn’t just make an “e-book”; I chose a very specific niche: a “Jungle Animals Coloring Book for Kids.” When you are super-specific, you’re not competing with everyone. Your unique idea is your biggest advantage.
